PRACTICING TAEKWONDO

As you know, it is very important that you understand the basics of taekwondo before moving to more advanced techniques. If you understand the basics well, you will have a strong foundation upon which you can build. Think of a tall building. If it has a strong foundation, it will always stand tall. If its foundation is weak, it could crumble because it doesn’t have support at its bottom. It’s the same thing in taekwondo. Without strength in the basics, it is impossible to improve. The techniques we are about to discuss are some of the basics you’ll need. You should practice them as much as possible at the dojang as well as at home.

You will have to learn basic stances and blocks before you can practice the punches and kicks of taekwondo. Some of the stances you’ll need are the horseback-riding stance (juchoom sogi), forward stance (ahpgubi), back stance (dwi-gibi sogi), and walking stance (ahp sogi). The blocks you’ll need include the low block (ahre maggi), inner block (momtong ahn maggi), outer block (momtong bakat maggi), and rising block (eolgul maggi). Let’s go over them one by one and then get into some punching and kicking.
